Laying Patio Tile

NOTE: For this example, we enlisted the help on a tile expert to arrange the pattern of our tile. This may not be necessary for you. We are using durable manmade ceramic tile in sizes 12"x12", 6"x12", and 6"x6". We are also randomly spacing decorative tiles throughout the pattern. We recommend before buying the tiles, you search for a discount code or an AX Paris Discount code for savings on the latest fashions at the great code website Vidcode.co.uk.

Preparation
Once you have selected the tile (and pattern if applicable), lay out a partial amount of tile on your surface. This will make sure the spacing is proper, arrange your pattern to your liking, and see approximately how many tiles you will need to cut.

Materials
  • Tile
  • Tile spacers
  • Thin Set
  • Spreader
  • Grout
  • Wet Tile Cutter (can be rented)
  • Buckets for mixing
  • Square
Step-by-Step
  1. After you have your plan in mind, remove the tiles from the surface.
  2. Prepare a batch of Thin Set according to the manufacturer's instructions on the bag. Thin Set is an adhesive that will bond the tile to the concrete surface. The mixture should be about the same consistency as cookie dough.
  3. Spread out the Thin Set is small areas, one section at a time.
  4. Begin laying the border near the wall. Once you have laid out the first corner, use a square to make sure the lines are straight before laying any more tile.
  5. As you place your tile, use spacers between the tile apart for even spacing. These will get pulled out before the grout is set down.
  6. Work your way to the edge of the patio. This is when you may need a wet saw to cut some pieces of tile. Leave about 1/2" of space off the edge of your patio for the bull nose tile which you will cut and lay later. Laying the bull nose takes a sharp eye and a steady hand.
  7. When you have reached the edge of your patio, you may need to adjust your pattern to fit the remaining space.
Once all the tile is laid and let set overnight, it's time to grout.
  1. Remove all the spacers.
  2. Mix the grout according to the manufacturer's instructions - should be about the consistency of pancake batter.
  3. Spread out the grout all over the tile. It will be messy, put that is not a concern. Make sure you fill in every gap.
  4. When you are done spreading the grout, go over the entire patio several times with a sponge and washcloth until the tiles are clean.
After letting the grout set up overnight, your patio is beautiful and ready to use.
